IP Ratings for Industrial Components: IP65, IP66, IP67 and IP69K Explained

Industrial components are often exposed to dust, water, cleaning chemicals, moisture, oils, vibration and outdoor conditions. When sensors, switches or connectors are not properly protected, they may fail prematurely or become unreliable.

This is where IP ratings become important. IP ratings help engineers and maintenance teams understand how well an enclosure protects against solids and liquids. For industrial components such as sensors, limit switches and connectors, selecting the correct IP rating can significantly improve reliability and reduce downtime.

However, IP ratings are often misunderstood. Many users know that a higher number “sounds better,” but do not always know what each rating means in practical applications.

This article explains common IP ratings used in industrial environments: IP65, IP66, IP67 and IP69K.

What does an IP rating mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection. It describes how well an electrical enclosure protects internal parts from solids such as dust and liquids such as water.

The rating usually includes two digits:

  • The first digit refers to protection against solids
  • The second digit refers to protection against liquids

For example, in IP67:

  • 6 means dust-tight
  • 7 means protected against temporary immersion in water

This does not mean that every IP67 device is suitable for every wet environment. The application still matters.

IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets

IP65-rated components are dust-tight and protected against water jets from a nozzle. This rating is suitable for many industrial environments where dust and occasional water exposure are present.

IP65 may be suitable for:

  • Indoor industrial machinery
  • General factory automation
  • Light washdown areas
  • Dusty but not submerged environments

However, IP65 may not be enough for high-pressure washdown, immersion or heavy cleaning processes.

IP66: dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets

IP66 offers stronger water protection than IP65. It is designed to protect against powerful water jets.

IP66 may be suitable for:

  • Heavy splash zones
  • Outdoor equipment
  • Dust-heavy environments
  • Washdown areas with stronger spray exposure

For components installed in exposed factory areas or areas cleaned regularly, IP66 can offer more robust protection.

IP67: dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion

IP67 components are dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water, generally up to a defined depth and time period.

IP67 is often selected for:

  • Harsh industrial environments
  • Outdoor sensor installations
  • Dust and moisture exposure
  • Mining and materials handling
  • Equipment exposed to occasional immersion or heavy moisture

In South African industrial environments, IP67 is often relevant where dust and moisture are both concerns.

IP69K: high-pressure, high-temperature washdown protection

IP69K is a high protection rating designed for environments where components may be exposed to high-pressure and high-temperature washdowns.

This is especially relevant in:

  • Food and beverage production
  • Hygienic manufacturing areas
  • Processing plants
  • Washdown zones
  • Environments using cleaning chemicals or steam exposure

Not every industrial component needs IP69K. However, where frequent washdown is required, it can be an important specification consideration.

Why connectors matter too

A common mistake is choosing an IP-rated sensor or switch but ignoring the connector. If the connector or cable entry is not equally protected, the installation may still fail due to moisture ingress.

A complete IP-rated installation should consider:

  • Sensor or switch body
  • Connector rating
  • Cable entry sealing
  • Mounting position
  • Cleaning direction
  • Chemical exposure
  • Installation workmanship

Matching IP ratings to applications

A general guide:

  • IP65: general factory use and light water exposure
  • IP66: stronger wash or outdoor spray exposure
  • IP67: dust plus moisture or temporary immersion risk
  • IP69K: high-pressure washdown and hygienic zones

For packaging, food, mining and outdoor applications, IP rating selection should be treated as part of reliability planning, not just a technical detail.
